Bringing Back the Glory Days of Bird Hunting

Dear Friends of Hollywood Farms,

I learned to quail hunt with my grandfather. I think I was about seven years old the first time he took me along.

He stood 6’4″, and I almost had to run to keep up. Luckily for me, his hunting buddy, Mr. Dave, was shorter, always with a cigar clenched between his teeth, barking, “Slow down, Charlie! We aren’t in a race!” Mr. Dave set a pace I could manage.

We would climb into my granddad’s old C10 Chevy pickup, two pointers riding loose in the bed – no dog boxes, no leads – just two old men, a kid, and two dogs finding birds on a cool Georgia morning.

My grandfather carried a battered Browning Sweet 16 – a humpback as heavy as a cannon but always deadly on the flush. Mr. Dave toted a Remington Model 11, a 20-gauge that looked just like the Browning but carried a different name.

In the 1960s, the land was a patchwork of small farms, fields, wooded strips, and low bottoms. Grandaddy and Mr. Dave always knew where the birds would be, reading the wind, the temperature, and the season like a book.

Back then, quail had everything they needed: feed, escape cover, and brood habitat. We always found birds—and always came home with a good bag.

Rebuilding a Bird Hunter’s Paradise

Today at Hollywood Farms, we are bringing that kind of habitat back.

Through regular burningplanting native grassesestablishing brood coverplanting food plots and legumes, and pruning live oaks, we are creating a landscape where wild birds can thrive again.

Every season, the habitat improves—and the hunting reflects it.

In the 2024–2025 season, we welcomed 126 hunters across 35 private groups for quail hunts that felt every bit like the hunts I remember as a boy.

We might not have that old C10 pickup anymore, but you’ll find two classic Jeepsa pair of Rangers with dog trailers, and a field full of eager bird dogs ready to work for you.

Our job today is to provide the same results for our guests and our family that I enjoyed as a kid. I want to continue the traditions my grandfather started with me so that they will carry on with my grandsons and granddaughters for many years to come.

Warm regards,
Chuck Duggan
